Raw versus Coated

We are back in Vermont! Thanks to everyone for the support, cheers, emails, hellos and for helping us spread the word about Bivo during our Big Bivo Roadtrip! This message from Scott B from Hotter N’ Hell made us so happy:

“Just wanted to stop by to say a big Texas thank you for being at the HH100 consumer show. My wife and I were in the market to replace some bottles this year. After stopping by the booth and listening to Robby talk about the bottle, we continued on through the show. After thinking about it some more, we decided to buy a set for each of us. After trying them out Friday morning, then all day on the event. All I can say is wow. The Bivo Trio is absolutely the best bottle I have ever used in my 18 years going to Hotter’n Hell. They worked so well keeping the drink cold, I had to keep requesting no ice at each rest stop. Something I never wanted to do before. Great bottles! I am so glad you were at the show.”

We continue to reflect on what we learned on the road. It was such a good experience to see you touch the bottles, ask questions and make decisions on which bottle to pick. This week, I wanted to focus on Raw versus Coated because that was a common discussion we had at events!

We originally launched with just coated (no raw) because we loved the feel and performance attributes of the silicone coating. The colors all have a silicone coating on them which we added for extra grip in the hand and the cage, as well to add little extra protection from rattling in the cage (particularly metal ones!). After some consideration around the scratching of the coating and popularity of stainless steel, we decided to add the Raw version as well and it now makes up about 30% of our sales.

Why do people pick Coated?

  • Grip! It really does add grip to the bottle. This is particularly nice when your hands and/or bottle are wet.
  • Color! It’s fun to have the color pop on the bike (or desk)!
  • Rattle! While the shape of the bottle is the biggest help for keeping the bottle quiet in the cage, the coating helps prevent those little noises, especially while using a metal cage.

Why do people pick Raw?

  • Finish! The coated bottles are prone to scratching over time, especially in muddy or dusty conditions. Robby likes to tell people that if you are the type of person who parks their car in strategic locations do it doesn’t get scratched, you probably should buy the raw.
  • Steel is real! But seriously, people really like the stainless look. Steel has become really popular as a bike material and that has translated into people liking the raw look of the bottle on their bike.
  • No stick! If you plan to put your bottle in a hip belt or backpack, the raw slides in and out of fabric easier than the coated version. When I Nordic ski, I tend to use the raw so it slides in and out easier in my water bottle carrier.

We like to show people how the bottle will scratch over time (left photo). Those bottles have been well love and we borrowed them for a photoshoot from Sam Noel and Adam Morse. Funny thing is, they both wanted their bottles back after the shoot because they had a special attachment to them. Scratches and dents can tell stories about the adventures they have taken you on. But, we recognize that's not for everyone, so we created the Raw too!

Hi Tom! Thanks for the feedback on our colors! We always have our “core” colors that are more subtle available- Black, True Blue, and Raw. Every other color we offer is seasonal- so we are coming out with new colors a few times per year. In past seasons, we’ve offered grey, and we’ve tested out white as well. It’s great to know you’re interested in more subtle colors and I will discuss this with the product team for the future! While many of our customers love bright colors, I know many also prefer more neutral tones and we’re always working to provide options that everyone will like. Thanks for the feedback, from Keaton at Bivo.

I’m disappointed in the color choices. Some of us don’t want loud colors. I use bottles on several different bikes and I like a subtle, simple color for water bottles. Black is, but it’s going to heat up in the sun with an uninsulated bottle (I don’t want the extra weight of the insulated bottles). Raw is going to be harder to hold and rattle more. Why no white or gray? Those would be perfect. I can’t believe you have pink and “mint” but not white.

I absolutely love this bottle! The flow rate is easy and incredible . Unfortunately, I purchased this bottle at an expo on my first Century ride and it already got scratches on it. It’s such a pretty blue color and broke my heart to see those scratches after one use . The problem was it was a rainy drizzly day and other bikes were spraying their dirt and grit. The dirt and grit got on the bottle cage I have and every time I pulled my bottle out to drink I could hear the scratching noise of the bottle against the dirty cage ☹️ Maybe you could design a cage that is scratch resistant to go with the bottle? But, on a positive note I never dropped the bottle, even in the wet conditions, bc the grip is so good on the the outside. I will consider the scratches battle wounds. Thank you for designing this I’ve been so unhappy drinking water out of disgusting plastic for years 😄

it needs a loop of some kind to make it easier to get out of the bike water bottle carrier. I love it, but it is difficult to get out due to the reach. some type of loop would help A LOT!! (at least for me… 65 and clumsy)

When is the insulated RAW bottle coming out? I put stickers on them that stops slippage and rattling.

Re: Helpful Reflection
I have an insulted black coated bivo that I absolutely love because it keeps ice and water cold for a very long time. I especially enjoyed it on a recent travel and hiking adventure – great for air travel and hotel rooms.
My personal test involved putting the bottle in a metal cage and in a plastic cage to see how its size, weight and coating would hold up. That said, those interested might find the following of interest.
When added to the metal cage the bottle caused my metal bottle cage on my road bike, to flex. I believe this is due to the added weight and breadth of the bottle. The end result is a now and again irritating rattle – amplified when crossing RR tracks, rough areas and regular irregularities on the road. In turn, this has caused much loss of bottle coating and the riding season is not done. Note – I snapped one cage when I tried bending the cage to tighten the fit. That said I do not recommend using the bivo with a metal cage – cyclist hate noises coming from their bike!
However, when inserted in my plastic bottle cages there is no rattling and the bivo bottle does not appear to want to jump out of the cage.
So wheather you are just hanging around the house, doing yardwork, going to class, flying the friendly skies or having a traveling adventure I would highly recommend the coated insulted bottle for keeping your water ice cold for hours; just be sure you use plastic waterbottle cages when using it on your bike!
Sincerely,
A guy who loves to drink ice water

You should mockup a hybrid where just the indented area for your thumb is coated

Sorry I missed you at the HH100 this past weekend, I missed your booth. I have the coated bottles and love them, keeping liquids cold and easy drinking out of them.

I love the plain Stainless, besides the clean look: no extra plastics or silicone. Possibly keeps water cooler in sunny conditions as better refecting the sun. I found that water never even gets near that ugly warm as is does in a plastic bottle when the sun guess right in and absorbed… BTW: Did you ever thought about a even fancier bottle make from Titanium?

I love the coated bottles, for biking there is nothing better and this is the differential with other metal bottles, because it really reduces the annoying rattling of steel bottles. My only suggestion would be to introduce new colors and some metalic colors. I was the 1st one to buy Bivo from a South Florida riding group, and at least 6 other riders already bought, and more are checking and asking about the product.

Less ice , no funny tastes from my last use, easy to clean and still dents up and Strachey with miles of character. They are the best bottles, and I’m not throwing or recycling another two at least plastic bottles every year! Thank you
