Performance and Fun - Why They Matter

We have been following the Tour de Ski quite closely (Charlotte from our team was actually there watching and I’m not sure about you, but I’m JEALOUS).  Ben Ogden got his first World Cup podium on Saturday. He was the third fastest man in the world (and he chooses to drink from a Bivo, just saying 😉). WILD.

We have been talking a lot about communicating what Performance Hydration is, what that means and why it matters to you. I say this because Ben is clearly a high performance athlete, and he puts so much emphasis on having FUN. He does things he really shouldn’t – like mountain bike on days he is supposed to go easy and gets his heart rate into level 3. Those were his favorite workouts of the year and even though he wasn’t “supposed” to do it, clearly, it’s working for him. It was ingrained in Ben from a young age and it was ingrained in me as well. I’m not sure if it’s a Nordic ski thing but I think it’s pretty awesome and applies to so many things in life. Ben also knows how to push himself and make himself hurt on the days it matters. It's certainly a fine balance but I do believe that FUN often gets pushed aside.

We don’t make a big deal about New Year resolutions in our house – I don’t think you should just make one giant shift on the first day of a new year. It’s all about continuous improvements. Making sure fun isn’t forgotten has been a part of Bivo from day one – as was making sure performance was a top priority. You can’t have one without the other. So, keep having fun and we are excited to experience 2024 with you.

Now – GO WATCH THE TOUR! (sadly Ben got sick so can't compete, but we love cheering for all the athletes).

I love that you acknowledge this about Ben!!! He’s the best! Knowing how to have fun is key to living fully and enjoying what you do whether you are a World Cup skier or just learning to ski. If it’s fun, you’ll want to keep coming back for more, and if you keep coming back for more you will get better at it at the level you’re at!! As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life! Ben knows just when to focus and be in the zone, but also knows that having fun will keep him in the game, because heck, it’s fun!! So why not give your skis a break and ride your bike one day! It’s brilliant!

Fantastic blog post! It’s all about enjoying yourself, people. As an athlete you never know when things may change. If your mindset is always centered around having fun and optimizing every situation then change is just that. Change. Never worse just different. Keep smiling out there and happy 2024 :)
